1. Official Information
On September 25, 2025, Starbucks—the world’s largest coffee chain—announced a large-scale restructuring plan with an estimated cost of $1 billion over the next three years. The goal of this plan is to close underperforming stores, reallocate resources to locations with stronger competitive advantages, and at the same time invest in operational technology and customer experience.
According to the company’s official announcement, Starbucks will review its entire global network of over 38,000 stores. Some locations in North America and Europe will be shut down or converted into more compact formats such as pick-up stores (takeaway only) or drive-thru stores (serving exclusively through drive lanes). At the same time, Starbucks will allocate a large portion of its budget to upgrade automated brewing systems, apply AI to demand forecasting, and improve supply chain management to minimize raw material waste.
Analysts consider this a bold but necessary plan. With rising rental costs, inflationary pressures, shifts in consumer habits after the pandemic, and increasing competition from more agile local coffee chains, Starbucks is compelled to act to maintain its leadership position.
The announcement immediately made waves in the market: Starbucks’ stock rose 4% during that day’s trading session. Investors expressed support for the “cut to grow” strategy, as it demonstrated the company’s willingness to make tough decisions to strengthen its financial and operational foundation.
