Part 1 – The Anglo – Teck Story on September 9, 2025

If you’ve ever followed the mining industry, the names Anglo American and Teck Resources are no strangers. Anglo, headquartered in London, is one of the world’s largest diversified miners, with operations spanning platinum, diamonds, and iron ore. Teck, from Canada, is best known for its copper and metallurgical coal business—critical ingredients for the steel industry.

On September 9, 2025, global media outlets including Reuters, the Financial Times, and Bloomberg reported that Anglo American and Teck Resources are finalizing a historic merger deal. If completed, the combined company would become one of the world’s largest copper producers, rivaling industry giants like BHP, Rio Tinto, and Glencore.

Why copper? Because copper is the backbone of the green energy transition. It’s essential for electric vehicles, renewable power systems, and smart grids. Analysts project that global copper demand will double by 2035. In other words: whoever secures copper supply today holds the key to tomorrow’s green economy.

But both Anglo and Teck are under pressure: rising extraction costs, volatile commodity prices, shareholder demands for higher returns, and growing regulatory requirements to cut carbon emissions. Against this backdrop, merging isn’t just an option—it’s a survival strategy.
