What happened?
On September 3, 2025, the U.S. District Court handed down a landmark decision in the Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Alphabet – the parent company of Google. After months of hearings, Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google had abused its market power in online search and advertising.
The court ordered Google to:
Share search data with competitors, instead of keeping it locked away.
End certain exclusive contracts with major partners, which had secured Google’s default position on many devices and platforms.
Importantly, Google was not forced to divest or spin off Chrome, Android, or its other core products.
This ruling sent shockwaves through the tech world. Online advertising is a multi-hundred-billion-dollar industry, and any structural change to Google’s dominance could reshape the balance of power for years to come.
