1. Official Announcement

On September 29, 2025, Sony Group announced it would spin off its $9.5 billion financial services division into an independent company. The move attracted significant international market attention because the financial arm had provided Sony with stable revenue for many years, especially in Japan. However, this divestment signals a clear strategic intent: Sony wants to concentrate its resources entirely on entertainment—films, music, gaming, and the PlayStation ecosystem.

According to the company, the spin-off is expected to be completed in fiscal year 2026 after all legal procedures are finalized. Most of the resources freed from the financial division will be reinvested in entertainment and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) for content production, game development, and streaming platforms.

Initial market reactions were largely positive. Sony’s share price rose slightly on the day of the announcement, and investors viewed the decision as a decisive step to strengthen Sony’s position against global entertainment giants such as Disney, Netflix, and Tencent.
