Introducing GPT-4o and more tools to ChatGPT free users
OpenAI has announced the launch of GPT-4o, an enhanced version of the GPT-4 model that underpins its flagship product, ChatGPT. According to OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, the new model is significantly faster and boasts improved capabilities across text, vision, and audio. In a livestream on Monday, Murati highlighted that GPT-4o will be available for free to all users, with paid users enjoying up to five times the capacity limits of free users.
In a detailed blog post, OpenAI revealed that GPT-4o’s features will be introduced gradually, with text and image functionalities starting to roll out immediately in ChatGPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared additional insights, noting that GPT-4o is "natively multimodal," allowing it to generate content and understand commands in voice, text, or images. Developers will have access to the GPT-4o API, which Altman mentioned is half the price and twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo, enabling more efficient and cost-effective integration.
One of the standout features of GPT-4o is its enhanced voice mode. The app will now function as a real-time voice assistant, capable of responding dynamically and understanding its surroundings, a significant upgrade from the current mode which handles only one prompt at a time based on what it can hear.

Reflecting on OpenAI’s journey in a follow-up blog post, Altman discussed the company’s evolving vision. Initially aimed at generating broad benefits for the world, the focus has shifted towards making advanced AI models available to developers through paid APIs, empowering them to create innovative solutions that benefit society.
Leading up to the GPT-4o launch, there was much speculation about OpenAI's announcement, with some expecting an AI search engine to rival Google and Perplexity, a voice assistant integrated into GPT-4, or even a new model, GPT-5. OpenAI strategically timed the GPT-4o launch just ahead of Google I/O, where Google is set to unveil new AI products from its Gemini team.
When using GPT-4o, ChatGPT Free users will now have access to features such as:
